Product description
PIAGGIO revolutionized the world of large frame motor transmissions with the introduction of the
COSA 2 clutch
. All the existing large frame clutch problems were solved.
Since around 1995 the COSA 2 clutch has been used in all VESPA PX EFL/’98/MY /’11 and of course, the COSA 2 models build by PIAGGIO. It comes complete with 4 friction plates, 8 springs and a sturdy clutch basket design. Due to the higher pressure created by the increased number of springs and the increased frictional surface area power can be transmitted more effectively between the crankshaft and the gearbox. Precision laser-cut clutch plates prevent any problems with snagging clutches. No jerking, no slipping, an optimal release point and all that combined with a light, easy clutch lever action, even when using a stronger set of springs.
In the past, there were enormous fluctuations in the quality of NEWFREN and PIAGGIO parts. That is why we recommend that all Largeframe riders with more that 15PS use the clutch.
This
SIP COSA 2 Standard / Sport clutch
is equipped with the clutch basket that was especially produced for this purpose: hardened by induction, precise notch, reinforced securing ring. The interior of the clutch basket, designed developed and produced exclusively for, has 16 clutch spring recesses so that the 8 or 16 springs from the COSA 2 clutch type assembly can be used, one piece outer ring etc. This clutch won
t slip, is ready for plug&play use and works just the way it was originally supposed to.

The clutch basket of the
COSA 2 Race clutch
is CNC machined from a solid aluminium alloy block and is hardened using a nitration process for added durability. The groove of the circlip has been optimized, holes and cut-outs reduce the weight. The interior of the clutch basket, designed developed and produced exclusively for, has 16 clutch spring recesses so that the 8 or 16 springs from the COSA 2 clutch type assembly can be used. The rivets have also been specially produced for this unit, with grooves for ease assembly and an anti corrosive treatment. Due to this we can keep this item at an affordably low price, coupled with the use of the highest quality materials.

The overall design of the
SIP ‘Ultrastrong’ clutch
basket is based upon that of the MMW ‘Superstrong’ type and is also constructed for by MMW. Up till now this type of clutch was only really suitable for dedicated race use, but now thanks to a slimmer design can also be considered for use as part of a road-going touring motors set-up. The version of the ‘Superstrong’ clutch also does without the standard COSA 2 clutches baseplate, which has been replaced by a wave shaped baseplate. There are no rivets that can shear in its construction and ten COSA 2 clutch springs are installed. As far as the materials and production quality of these MMW manufactured clutch bushes are concerned, these items represent absolute state-of-the-art motor components. In contrast to the original items, these are machine-pressed directly onto the base-plate of the clutch assembly and then reduces clutch grabbing or judder.
The main difference of the
MMW ‘Superstrong’
clutch versions can be found in the design of the clutch basket. The holes that are situated on the sides of the MMW versions basket are absent on the type. The clutch basket is also constructed using a more easily modifiable EC80 type steel, which is better known as F1 steel in Italy, as opposed to the MMW clutch basket which relies on a 42CroMo4 material for its manufacture. Our clutch basket was conceived to fit more easily beneath the original clutch cover, with minimal modification being required. Some clutch covers/casings only need a couple of internal drip ridges to be carefully snapped off using a normal set of pliers! This clutch basket type has already been successfully proven in many motors capable of producing up to 30PS and even more. We have decided to call it a ‘sport’ clutch basket and not a ‘race’ type due to the fact that it is compatible for inclusion in the set-up of your motor with only minimal modification of your crankcases being necessary.

Don
t forget to order new pressure plate, push rod, locking washer and nut. Make sure to soak the clutch plates in gearbox oil once again.
