Product description
Heavy Duty clutch-cover 2.0
The Smallframe clutch covers share the fate of many Piaggio spare parts. Production has long ended and finding good quality used covers is getting increasingly difficult. These are very much needed though to use the six spring clutches which technically are vastly superior over the older centre spring design. Hence decided to come to the rescue. The clutch-covers for
Vespa PK XL2 are first quality forged and meticulously CNC machined before being treated to a state-of-the-art surface finish. The outer contour was changed to make the covers stronger, on the inside there is enough meat to modify the covers to accept conversion clutches. The clutch covers are a straight replacement fit on nearly all geared Smallframe Vespas. We recommend using a clutch of the well know PK XL 2 type with its pressure plate bearing. This combination makes for an ideal clutch with no drag, for both racing and everyday riding, with a light-to-pull lever. If you intend to run wide- or tubeless rims you will either have to slightly modify the cover or space the rim accordingly to clear the cover. Other than with the original XL2 cover you will not have to modify or change the brake back plate for a Vespa 50-125, PV/ET3. The clutch-cover PK50XL also fits the older Smallframe models. Attention: There are a number of reports where the clutch actuating arm slipped, often in combination with heavy clutch springs. The cause of that often is the clutch plunger with its gear teeth. Some of the repro plungers come with an imperfect tooth profile similar to that of a worn original plunger. As a solution we have the PK XL plunger made to our own specifications.
Conclusion:
high end manufacturing with a decent bearing, perfect upgrade to finally run a much superior XL2 clutch without problems.
The heavy-duty version of the cover that is now available was developed to meet the high demands of modern clutches with often heavy springs. They still look similar on the outside, so it
s only the different logo to differentiate them from the earlier version. The technical details are a different story though. We first measured a ton of different setups, crankcases, gearboxes, clutches, primary gears, clutch baskets. To put it bluntly: we sat down and used the latest of measuring equipment to document accurately anything of importance. That
s necessary to make sure nothing, neither a clutch basket, nor a clutch plate, nor anything else rubs on the cover. The next step then was to determine all dimensions relevant for the technical function of the cover. The gasket face of the cover is neither parallel nor perpendicular to the plane of the plunger guide bore. That means that spacing the cover will move the plunger piston out of the centre of the pressure plate. The same happens if tight tolerances are not met. As a result the clutch will drag, or jump when being fed in. We have made sure to measure these details as accurately as we measured the difference in angle between the gasket surface and the plunger piston centre line. Based on this preliminary work we designed the new heavy-duty cover to meet the requirement of clutches for powerful engines in particular. With the wealth of options available today following a meticulous fitting procedure is necessary. The set includes a gasket and an extensive pictured instruction of how to fit the clutch. This includes a check list for you to work through to make sure the end result is as it should be.
High precision with extensive testing
Extremely clean and precise clutch actuation
Works great with plunger pistons and clutch arms
Forged aluminium
CNC machined
Durable anodising as finish
Extensive manual with step by step check-list
SIP – TIP: Best order clutch lever, spring and
push rod with the clutch cover. You will also need PK XL2 clutch and PK XL2 pressure plate.
