Converting a Vespa motor to a reed-valve intake system is not only an option for tuners looking to boost power output. If the delicate disc-valve seal is seriously damaged a reed-valve replacement is often easier and cheaper than repair. To complete a reed-valve assembly a suitable intake manifold will also be required.
If you attempt to fit a modern PK motor into a vintage smallframe chassis you will encounter problems routing the three-stud mounting PK style manifold through the openings made in the frame for the earlier type. Until now the altered shape and length of the PK manifold could only be compensated for by unsightly frame butchery! To solve this unfortunate state of affairs we have had special manifolds produced as part of the SERIE PRO range. They are compatible with the PK three-stud fixing and exactly shaped to fit through the openings in all Vespa 50-125/PV/ET-3 frames. The optimal dimensions, matched to the chassis, make fitting this engine update child’s play!
Although extensive crankcase modification is advised for any reed-valve conversion, the reward can be seen in the many advantages it provides. The motor is provided with fresh fuel charge on demand and not when the timing of the crankshaft web allows it. Combined with the manifolds for the Dell’orto PHBL 24/25 carburettor they provide a noticeable boost in performance.
