This ‘Vespone RR 177 Racing’ is a very well produced performance cylinder from PINASCO for Vespa largeframe small-block engines. This excellent cylinder brings elements from modern two-stroke motor design, such as large area transfer port windows and a bridged exhaust port to the smaller largeframe engines. This enables the cylinder to help provide a performance also suitable for competitive race use to motors stretching as far back as the sixties, through to the final PX engines produced by PIAGGIO and LML. The long-thread spark plug is mounted centrally in the cylinder head to ensure a more even and efficient combustion. The cylinder cowling will require modification to accommodate this feature and a suitably-sized plug is included in the kit to seal the original off-centre opening. A centring collar facilitates the correct positioning of the cylinder head upon the cylinder. This performance cylinder is constructed using aluminium, making it more thermally stable than versions made from cast-iron. A cleanly finished cylinder bore lining helps ensure a long and enduring performance. The piston, with its two 1mm thick piston rings, is especially light and it is also coated to provide peace of mind during the motors initial running-in period. The gudgeon-pin has a weight-saving bi-conic design. Full mounting instructions, in both English and Italian, are included in the delivery. Aluminium/63mm bore/6 transfer ports/bridged exhaust port/177.68cc/tuning.
Conclusion:
A decent all-rounder with exemplary production quality, including sufficient potential for high-performance tuning projects.
TIP: Always replace the crankshaft bearings and oil-seals when fitting a new cylinder. To fully exploit this cylinders potential a performance exhaust, such as our Performance, should also be included. A carburettor from 24mm upwards will provide sufficient fuelling. To transmit the extra power to the rear wheel effectively a stronger clutch, such as the Race or Sport types, is also a good idea.
